Fighting Type 1 Diabetes across borders!

Scaringly, there is a growing incidence of Type 1 Diabetes – of particular concern is the sharp increase in T1D among children. T1D has developed into one of the most common chronic diseases among children. No explanation has been found for this shift, which seems to be particularly pronounced in the Nordic countries.

DiaUnion was created with the aim of researching the development of therapies for the prevention and intervention of type 1 diabetes and related autoimmune diseases. This will reduce the burden on patients and at the same time the cost to society.

By sharing advanced research equipment and research data that can been accumulated over the years, DiaUnion has created a cross-border Center of Excellence in Medicon Valley and are now scaling up its program targeting to screen 45,000 people in Denmark and southern Sweden for type 1 diabetes.

“This is a ground-breaking project and not only because it will open up the possibility to delay disease development in thousands of children and young people. It is also very significant that for the first time we can prevent one of the many debilitating autoimmunne diseases from with more and more people are suffering” says hashtag#CarlJohanSonesson Chairman of the Regional Board at Region Skåne.

DiaUnion is today a public-private partnership between Lund University Steno Diabetes Center Copenhagen, Region Hovedstaden, Region Skåne, Sanofi and Medicon Valley Alliance – previously supported by Interreg Öresund-Kattegat-Skagerrak
