In a recent interview, Christina Krzyrosiak Hansen shares her personal journey of living with type 1 diabetes (T1D) since childhood, the fears and uncertainties she faced when considering pregnancy, and how she eventually became a mother.
As Mayor of Holbæk Municipality since the age of 25, she also reflects on balancing life with T1D, a demanding leadership role, and becoming a parent – supported by both healthcare professionals and an understanding workplace.
Today, the son is almost the same age Christina was when she first developed symptoms of T1D. Like many parents living with the disease, she knows there is an increased risk that her child could develop it too. To provide clarity, preparation, and peace of mind, Christina and her husband have chosen to have their son tested through DiaUnion’s early detection programme at Steno Diabetes Center Copenhagen.
Christina also shared her story at the Danish Parliament earlier this year, when Alliancen for T1Dlig Opsporing brought together researchers, healthcare professionals, policymakers, and families to discuss how earlier detection can improve lives. Her perspective was a powerful reminder that behind every statistic is a family navigating uncertainty, hope, and important decisions.
At DiaUnion, we support early detection of type 1 diabetes to help families prepare, reduce the risk of serious complications at diagnosis, and create opportunities for earlier support and intervention.
Thank you, Christina, for speaking so openly about your experiences and for helping raise awareness of life with type 1 diabetes.
