Autoimmune diseases and women’s health – time to connect the dots

On 17 March 2026 DiaUnion joined the Medicon Valley Alliance Women’s Health Network event on “Autoimmune Diseases: What Do We Know About Gender Differences?”

An important and timely discussion – and a strong reminder that gender matters in how we understand, diagnose and treat autoimmune diseases.

At DiaUnion, we were proud to support the event, where several speakers highlighted conditions central to our work:

  • Celiac disease – affecting women roughly twice as often as men
  • Thyroid disease – where around 80% of patients are women
  • Type 1 diabetes, with key take-home messages from Tanja Thybo’s presentation “Women and Type 1 Diabetes – The Need for Rethinking Technology and Treatment”:

Hormonal changes across life stages – from puberty to pregnancy and menopause – significantly impact glucose control and insulin needs. Yet, current technologies, clinical guidelines and treatment approaches do not adequately reflect female physiology.

One striking example discussed was menopause:
💬 Patients are often referred back and forth between gynaecologists and endocrinologists – with limited guidance beyond: “insulin needs might change and vary.”

This highlights a broader gap: a lack of integrated, cross-disciplinary clinical guidance – and is exactly where collaboration becomes essential.

We were pleased to attend alongside our sister project ReproUnion, as an example of how reproductive health and autoimmune diseases can also be brought closer together.

Bringing together endocrinology and gynaecology is not just relevant – it is necessary to deliver better, more personalised care.

A big thank you to Medicon Valley Alliance for an inspiring and important event – and for creating a space where these connections can grow.
