Nordic collaboration paves the way for screening of Type 1 Diabetes

DiaUnion’s screening program (TRIAD) in Sweden was featured by the MedTech Magazine on 16 September 2025. In the article experts suggest that if Sweden and Denmark adopt programs for early detection of T1D at a national level, they could lead globally in offering interventions to delay or perhaps even prevent disease onset.

The article further explains:

  • Many children are still diagnosed only once insulin deficiency has become serious, and about 1 in 4 children in Sweden are diagnosed with T1D through the severe complication of diabetic ketoacidosis.
  • New treatments like Tzield (teplizumab) – approved in the US, UK, and Canada – have been seen to delay the onset of T1D in people who carry biomarkers but don’t yet show symptoms. To make use of such preventive treatments, early detection is essential.
  • The TRIAD screening program for children aged 2–14 from the general population in Region Skåne (Sweden), is led by Lund University Clinical Research Center (CRC) in Malmö. Thousands of blood samples have been analyzed since 2020 as part of DiaUnion.

The article reinforces the urgency of developing public health strategies to move beyond research settings, invest in national programmes, and ensure follow-up and that support systems are ready. DiaUnion is part of that transformation.
