End of May 2026, DiaUnion colleagues contributed to the seminar in Copenhagen, where early detection and prevention strategies were high on the agenda.
Flemming Pociot and Jessica Melin spoke in a session about early detection in a broader perspective. Building on this Louise Roth presented new data exploring antibody screening for type 1 diabetes, celiac disease, and autoimmune thyroid disease in a general pediatric population.
The preliminary findings – based on testing more than 9,000 children as part of DiaUnion (TRIAD in Sweden) – show that:
🔹1.6% tested positive for type 1 diabetes-related autoantibodies
🔹2.5% for celiac disease
🔹2.7% for autoimmune thyroid disease
The study demonstrates both the feasibility and the potential value of broader, population-based approaches to early detection across autoimmune diseases. Importantly, identifying at-risk individuals earlier can help prevent severe complications, such as diabetic ketoacidosis, and identify those eligible for clinical prevention studies.
Together, these contributions underline a growing momentum towards early detection strategies – an area at the core of DiaUnion’s mission to improve outcomes for children and young adults at risk of type 1 diabetes and other autoimmune diseases.
