Can we slow, delay, or perhaps one day prevent type 1 diabetes (T1D)? And could remission or even a cure become a reality in the future?
These are some of the questions driving research efforts around the world, and the focus of a special evening event, which was hosted by Steno Diabetes Center Copenhagen on 2 September 2026.
The leading researchers Flemming Pociot, Jesper Johannesen and Joachim Størling shared the latest insights into T1D research and discussed developments ranging from understanding why insulin-producing beta cells are destroyed to emerging strategies aimed at preserving beta cell function and changing the course of the disease.
Topics included:
🔹Why and how the insulin-producing beta cells are destroyed
🔹How remaining beta cell function can be preserved and strengthened after diagnosis
🔹How we may delay and potentially prevent the development of T1D
For DiaUnion, early detection is a key area of focus. The earlier individuals at increased risk can be identified, the greater the opportunity to better understand disease progression and evaluate interventions that may help delay or prevent clinical onset of T1D.
